At Steamboat Soccer Club we have four mantras that we have established to help build and protect our culture. They remind us of what matters most and help us stay on track with our goals as players and as a club.

Game Model

  • The Game

Soccer is a simple yet beautiful game in which two teams comprised of eleven individuals each (teammates and opponents) interact with each other for the benefit of their team. The objective being to put the ball in the opponents net and deny the opponent putting the ball into ours. The theoretical simplicity of the game grows in complexity due to its dynamic, free flowing, and creative nature. The game is played with integrity and for the enjoyment of all involved including those spectating. It requires constant growth and development as well as a high level athleticism and intelligence for one to find success.

  • The Coach

Players develop players! And as human beings we learn by doing. That being the case we believe that the players themselves are the biggest protagonists of their development. And the coaches role is one of a guide and supporter. Through careful and inentional observation and feedback we ask our coaches to be there to aid in our players development by creating environments that facilitate learning through contextual training activities that represent the demands of the game

  • The Team

Soccer is a game of interactions, in which every action made by any player, at any given momemt, is based on information provided within the game from the opponent and from their teammates. Therefore it is paramount that every player has a good understanding of their roles and relationships with their teammates. And that players constantly scan the entire environment within the game in order to constantly pick up information to aid in their decision making and ultimately in thier execution of each action.

  • The Player

The ideal SSC player is one who demonstrates the highest level of Character, Mentality, Intelligence, Athleticism, and Skill. As a club we base all of our decisions around players according to the five traits above, and in the order listed. We believe that Character comes first and foremost, followed soon after by Mentality and Intelligence. People who display, refine, and constantly improve their Character, Mentality, and Intelligence will become players that are capable of acheiving higher levels of athleticism and skill. And when all five are combined we see better people and as a result better Players!

SSC is a POSSESSION BASED CLUB

We want the ball as often as possible because we feel it's the best way to develop players over the course of their journey AND the best way to get consistent results in matches. When we don't have the ball we look to win the ball back as quickly as possible and as high up the field as possible.

Once our teams hit the competitive level at U11 and all the way through their journey with us to U19 we ask each age group to  focus on each phase of the game in a progressive manner with the main focus being on a different third of the field at each age group.

  • U11-12 Age Group

The main focus for our U11 - U12 teams is working toward mastery of:

    • Building out from the Back when Attacking in their Defensive 3rd. With the main principles being:
    1. Can we maintain and Circulate Possession of the ball?
    2. Can we recognize and execute the correct moments to Attack and Advance the ball forward without losing possession

    And

    • Pressing High in when Defending in our Attacking 3rd. Main Principles being:
    1. Close Space quickly to apply pressure on the ball carrier
    2. Force the Opponents Play by taking away options and directing them into areas we want them to play
  • U13-14 Age Group

At the U13 - U14 ages we introduce the idea of five vertical channels within the field and integrate them into our main focus of working toward mastery of:

    • Creating Chances to score when Attacking in our Midfield 3rd. With the main principles being:
    1. Can switch fields to Unbalance the Opponent and find Space?
    2. Can we recognize and execute the correct moments to complete a pass or dribble in behind the opponents backline?

    And

    • Applying Medium Pressure when defending in our Midfield 3rd. Main Principles being:
    1. Deny the opponent Swithching Fields into Open Space
    2. Deny the Opponent Completing Passes or Dribbling In Behind our Back Line
  • U15-19 Age Group

Once we arrive at our oldest, U15 - U19 ages, our aim is to put it all together with our main focus being working toward mastery of:

    • Finishing when Attacking in our Attacking 3rd. With the main principles being:
    1. Attacking the Half Spaces or Assist Zones
    2. Completing Passes into the Goal Zone

    And

    • Low Pressure defending or Defending Deep when out of possession in our Defensiver 3rd. Main Principles being:
    1. Outnumber the Opponent in D3
    2. Staying between the ball and the Goal

U11 - U19 Competitive Methodology

A Realistic, Games Based Training Methodology

We want the ball as often as possible because we feel it's the best way to develop players over the course of their journey AND the best way to get consistent results in matches. When we don't have the ball we look to win the ball back as quickly as possible and as high up the field as possible.

The training activities that generally lend themselves to being more realistic / games based, and that we ask our coaches to explore most often include Rondos, Positional Play Games, and Small Sided / Match Games (see an example of each below).

4v1 Rondo

4v4+3 Positional Play Game

6v6 Match Game

We ask our players to be aware of the following Principles of Play as we guide them along their journey

  • MANAGING ONE'S SELF

    • Recognize & Solve
    • Confident
    • Decide
    • Create & Deceive
    • Mobile
    • Execute
    • Hard-working
    • Reflect
    • Communicate
  • MANAGING THE BALL

    • Attack / Advance forward
    • Play into space / Circulate the Ball
    • Play Simple & with Purpose
    • Pressure, Cover, Balance
    • Contain
    • Recover Ball / Possession
  • MANAGING SPACE
